The Cost Savings of Using an Electric Scooter vs. Other Transport in Budapest

The Cost Savings of Using an Electric Scooter vs. Other Transport in Budapest

Getting around Budapest can be expensive, but electric scooters are becoming a great way to save money. Compared to cars, taxis, and even public transport, they’re cheaper, more flexible, and eco-friendly.

If you buy an electric scooter, prices range from 150,000 to 500,000 HUF (€380–€1,250). But if you don’t want to own one, you can rent from services like Lime or Tier. Rentals usually cost 250 HUF (€0.60) to unlock and 50–65 HUF (€0.13–€0.16) per minute.

Furthermore, cars are way more expensive. Even a second-hand car costs at least 2 million HUF (€5,000), plus insurance, fuel, and maintenance.

Here, you can see some daily travel costs:

  • Electric Scooters: A 20-minute rental ride costs around 1,250 HUF (€3.15). If you own one, charging is super cheap—about 50 HUF (€0.12) per full charge, which lasts 20–40 km.
  • Public Transport: A single ticket is 450 HUF (€1.15), and a monthly pass is 9,500 HUF (€24). It’s affordable but can be slow and crowded.
  • Taxis & Ride-Sharing: A short ride (5 km) is 3,000–4,500 HUF (€7.50–€11.50). Too pricey for everyday use.
  • Private Cars: Fuel is about 650 HUF/liter (€1.65/l), plus parking fees (up to 600 HUF/hour). Owning a car can easily cost 40,000 HUF (€100) or more per month.

Besides saving money, electric scooters are better for the environment. They’re quiet, don’t pollute, and don’t need expensive fuel or maintenance. Over time, they’re way cheaper than cars and even taxis.
